ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Rooted in the Scottish Highlands, the collection reflects a personal connection developed while living in Edinburgh. Walks across the Munros near Strathcarron informed both palette and composition, capturing seasonal colours such as moss greens, burnt bracken oranges, umber browns, ochre, and heather purple. These tones are translated through naturally dyed linen, grounding the work in both place and process.
Close photographic studies of the ground, documented in repeated sections along walking routes, revealed intricate networks of line and form that closely resemble Ordnance Survey maps. This visual connection is deepened through archival research into 1940s maps of Limavady, Northern Ireland, linking landscape observation with family history and migration. My process of drawing was not with the end textile in mind, but to just capture the tones and surfaces of rocks, soil and vegitation.
The collection sits at the intersection of place, memory, and material heritage, tracing both physical terrain and ancestral routes. This is underscored by the closure of Peter Greig & Co, Scotland’s last linen mill, marking the end of over 200 years of production. In this context, the work becomes both a personal reflection and a wider commentary on the fragility and future of sustainable textile practice.
